International Commercial Arbitration (London), B.Eng Mining Engineering (WASM-Curtin), P.Eng, C.Eng, C.Pet.Eng, C.Sci, FIMMM, FEI, FSAIMM, MCIArb, FAusIMM(CP), AMDIAC, MCIM, MIEAust, MEIZ, SPE, SME possesses over 35 years of multi-disciplinary resource industry experience.
Mr Roberts is currently the Director of International Geo-Strategy International, Natural Resource Ge-Strategy (NRG), Resource Dispute Resolution (RDR), Centre for International Dispute Resolution (CIDR), Centre for Resource Risk Mitigation (CRRM) and Director of Element CMC. He is also a Senior Teaching and Research Fellow; lecturer of International Arbitration, and is directing the LLM programme in International Dispute Resolution & Management at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee. Mr Roberts’ current interests are in the fields of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Dispute Resolution and Resources Policy in the developing world.
He was, most recently, the General Manager of RSG Global/Coffey Mining; the Centre for International Dispute Resolution and Management (CIDRAM) and formerly the Deputy Director and Commercial Director of the CEPMLP, University of Dundee; Director of the MBA Programme in Resource Management and leader of the CEPMLP Africa Programme.
In addition to the above, he is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration; the International Bar Association: Section on Energy, Environmental; Natural Resources & Infrastructure Law and Dispute Resolution; the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association (AMPLA); the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN); the American Arbitration Association (AAA) Panel of Neutrals, Energy Arbitrators List Member and the Human Rights Institute (HRI).
Mr Roberts currently serves as Past President of the Mining Institute of Scotland, the Scottish Branch of the Institution of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IMMM); Director of the Western Australian Chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); Director of the Petroleum Education and Training Association, Director of the Scottish Oil Club and serves on the management Board of the Dundee and Angus Oil Venture Group (DAOVG).
He has formerly served in executive positions of the AusIMM in Ghana and Australia; The IEAust in Kalgoorlie, Australia; the Australian Drilling Industry Association; the Australasian Mineral Drilling Association and the Tanzania Exploration and Mining Association, working on Industry recommendations for the Tanzanian Mining Code. In addition, Mr Roberts has served as an expert witness in the fields of Petroleum, Mining, Exploration and Drilling Engineering.
It has been his honour to represent Australia in a diplomatic capacity, acting as the Australian Consular Warden in both Zambia and Western Tanzania. His name has also been recommended to the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, as both an arbitrator and a scientific expert relating to Natural Resources and/or the Environment.
Receiving his engineering qualifications in Australia as an Awardee of the prestigious AusIMM Tertiary Scholarship, Mr Roberts is able to practice globally, and has been conferred the professional title Eur.Ing. by the Fédération Européenne d'Associations Nationales d'Ingénieurs (FEANI) and is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Chartered Scientist in the disciplines of Mining and Petroleum Engineering in the UK, Australia, USA and various African and Asian countries. He gained an LL.M (Master of Laws) in Resources Law and Policy at the CEPMLP, a Post Graduate Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration at the University of London and Accreditation as an International Civil and Commercial Mediator from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), London.
After military service, Mr Roberts started his 35-plus year career in architecture and major construction. He later entered the Resource Industry as a drill crewmember, working his way up through the ranks to board level. Mr Roberts was involved in the discovery and development of numerous world-class deposits. Subsequently, he spent five years in academia at Curtin University's Western Australian School of Mines, studying and lecturing in Mining, Petroleum and Core Engineering subjects. The remaining years were spent mainly in the drilling and production sector, working in operational, managerial and executive positions negotiating and directing major projects (values exceeding US$150 million) in the Mining and Petroleum Industries throughout the Australia-Pacific Region, the Middle East, South Eastern and North Eastern Asia, with the last six years, prior to the CEPMLP, as Managing Director and General Manager of a world major Resources Services Company throughout Africa.
